Enso
« Back to Glossary Index
A natural climate phenomenon involving periodic changes in sea surface temperatures and atmospheric pressure across the tropical Pacific Ocean. It has two main phases:
- El Niño: Warmer-than-average ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific, leading to droughts, floods, and disrupted weather patterns globally.
- La Niña: Cooler-than-average ocean temperatures in the eastern Pacific, often producing opposite climate effects to El Niño.
ENSO strongly influences global atmospheric circulation, precipitation, and temperature patterns.
