Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage
« Back to Glossary Index
A climate mitigation technology that produces energy by burning biomass (such as wood, crops, or organic waste) and then captures and stores the carbon dioxide released during combustion. BECCS can create net negative emissions because the biomass absorbs CO₂ while growing, and the captured CO₂ is stored underground in geological formations, preventing it from re-entering the atmosphere.
