Glacial–Interglacial Cycles

« Back to Glossary Index

Long-term climate fluctuations during the Quaternary period include cold glacial periods, during which ice sheets expand, alternating with warmer interglacial periods, when the ice retreats. These cycles are primarily driven by changes in the Earth’s orbit and tilt (Milankovitch cycles), which affect the amount and distribution of solar radiation received by the Earth.
