Natural peat swamps

Waterlogged ecosystems where partially decomposed plant material accumulates to form peat. They store large amounts of carbon, support unique biodiversity, and regulate local water flow. Their saturated, low-oxygen conditions slow decomposition, making them important long-term carbon sinks in the global carbon cycle.
